Wayne Grudem
SCHOLARS

Wayne Grudem, in his comprehensive work Politics According to the Bible, presents a political theology centered on the belief that Christians have a moral and biblical duty to actively influence government for good. Directly opposing views that advocate for political withdrawal, Grudem argues that government is an institution ordained by God with the primary purpose of restraining evil, punishing wickedness, and promoting justice and order. He sees a clear, positive role for government in God's design for the world, rejecting the idea that it is an inherently corrupt sphere from which believers should remain separate.
Grudem’s approach is to systematically apply biblical teachings to a wide range of contemporary political issues. He believes Scripture provides sufficient moral guidance to inform specific policies, from economics, where he advocates for free-market principles that encourage personal responsibility and stewardship, to national defense, where he supports a just war position. He also applies biblical ethics to social issues like abortion and marriage. Grudem does not argue for a theocracy or a government run by the church; rather, he advocates that the church should have "significant" influence on the government. He has written several articles endorsing candidates.
For Grudem, political engagement is not an optional extra but a crucial aspect of loving one's neighbor and seeking the welfare of society. He contends that significant influence for good is not only possible but is a biblically mandated responsibility, promoting a robust and direct Christian participation in the political process.
